Loaf cakes are made in a rectangular pan, a "loaf" pan if you like! They are usually a little denser and more moist than a regular cake and get flavoured with spices.
They're great as a snack with a hot drink, since you can cut a slice to your desired thickness, and they're great as something to take to an office lunch or somewhere you'd like something sweet without the formality of a large cake.
